NEW YORK: A California teacher, who pleaded guilty to sleeping with her three underage students and having a baby with one of them, has been jailed for one year.
Laura Whitehurst, 28, was arrested in July from her home in Redlands after she gave birth to a girl fathered by one of her students.
This sexual predator was an English teacher at Citrus Valley High School.
Her arrest took place after the mom of the 16-year-old student, who fathered her baby, came to know of the alleged affair to led to her pregnancy.
After her arrest, the teacher was dismissed by her school even as police found that she had previously slept with two other minor students – aged 14 and 17 – five years ago when she was 23.
The female teacher was charged with 41 counts of sex and oral copulation and faced up to 29 years in jail. But she got off lightly after entering into a plea bargain by pleading guilty to six counts on July 31.
Jailing her for one year, a San Bernardino Superior Court judge on Wednesday also imposed five years’ probation on her and lifelong registration as a sex offender.
The mother of the 16-year-old boy who fathered this sexual predator teacher’s baby, was very angry, calling her a “child predator.’’
In a statement read in the court, the mother of the boy said, “She robbed him (her son) of his innocence and youth.’’
The mother said this teacher “actively pursued my son” when he was just 16.
The teacher’s attorney said she is ashamed of what she did to her underage students.
