NEW YORK (NEWS): Bobby Jindal, governor of Louisiana, escaped unhurt when a rental truck hit his SUV on Sunday.
The Indian American Jindal was returning home after watching his son’s soccer game in Baton Rouge when the accident happened as the rental took a wrong U-turn, police said.
No one was hurt in the accident.
In a statement on Sunday, Louisiana Police said, “This afternoon south of downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana State Police vehicles assigned to the Governor’s Mansion were involved in a crash when a “box” rental truck made an illegal U-turn in front of the unmarked police cars.
“The crash occurred at approximately 5pm on LA 30 (Nicholson Dr.) south of downtown Baton Rouge. Two State Police SUVs were northbound on LA 30 in the inside lane when a “box” rental truck made an illegal U-turn from the outside lane. The truck side swiped the first SUV which was carrying Governor Bobby Jindal and a Trooper. The second SUV operated by a Trooper took evasive action and struck a utility pole. The Trooper in the second SUV received minor injuries. There were no other injuries in the crash.’’
The driver of the rental truck faces charges of illegal U-turn.
Jindal, whose parents come from Malerkotla in Punjab, was elected governor of Louisiana in 2007. Before that, he became the second Indian American to become a Congressman when he was elected to the US Congress in 2004 and again re-elected in 2006.
Before him, Punjab-born Dalip Singh Saund became the first Indian American Congressman in 1957.
