NEW YORK: With his net worth pegged at $72.7 billion, Bill Gates is the richest man of the world again, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire index.
Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani’s worth is $24 billion. This richest Indian is also the 25th richest person in the world.
Non-resident Indian Lakshmi Mittal, the boss of steel giant ArcelorMittal, is the 54th richest person with net worth of $15.2 billion.
Dilip Shanghvi, founder of India’s largest drug maker Sun Pharmaceuticals, is on the 85th spot on the billionaires’ list, according to the billionaires’ index.
Another NRI businessman Pallonji Mistry, who is known as the `Phantom of Bombay House and whose family owns 18 percent of Tata Sons and the construction company Shapoorji Pallonji Group, ranks 89th, with net worth of $11.7 billion.
Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, with their individual fortune of $26.3 billion and $25.9 billion, rank 18th and 19th respectively.
Laurene Jobs, the widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs with her net worth of $11.3 billion, ranks 94th.
Interestingly, Bill Gates becomes the world’s richest after six years thanks to Microsoft shares hitting a five-year high on Wednesday. The 57-year-old co-founder of the software giant relegated Mexican investor Carlos Slim to the second spot.
The 16 percent jump in Gates’ fortune since last year has taken his total worth to an estimated $72.7 billion. On the other hand, the fortune of Carlos Slim has slipped because his America Movil SAB, which is the largest mobile-phone operator in the Americas, has dropped 14 percent – or $3 billion – after the passage of a bill by Mexico to curtail his market dominance.
After being sluggish for years, Microsoft shares are up 28 percent this year. The surge is attributed mainly to “cost controls and sales of business and server software amid weak demand for personal computers running the new Windows 8 operating system.’’
Another reason is the jump in the value of Gates’ stock holding in the Canadian National Railway Co (CNR) and waste collection company Republic Services Inc (RSG).
Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is the third richest man, with his worth over $59.7 billion.
At number four is Spaniard Amancio Ortega, Europe’s wealthiest person, who is worth $56 billion.
