MUMBAI: Apple CEO Tim Cook started his maiden India visit on Wednesday by paying obeisance at the Siddhivinayak temple here.
Remember his former boss and Apple founder Steve Jobs had visited Neem Karoli Baba in 1973 to seek spiritual inspiration before he stated the company.
Interestingly, Cook, who will make some announcements about expansion of Apple software development in India, ran into Reliance chief Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant Amabni at the temple. The two talked briefly.
The Apple chief will meet Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Tata Group chief Cyrus Mistry and Bollywood super star Shah Rukh Khan before he heads to Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi.
He will meet Prime Minister Modi in Delhi.
Cook’s visit to assumed significance as Apple’s sales are declining in the US and China and India becomes the major market for global smart phone players.
In fact, the sales of Apple smart phones have already jumped by over 50 percent in 2016. But iPhones still account for just 2 percent of India’s smart phone market which saw 100 million units sold in 2015.
Cook is likely to announce expansion of Apple’s software development operations in India.
