NEW DELHI: Bollywood actress Nagma, who is the Congress candidate from the Meerut Lok Sabha constituency, on Thursday night slapped a man trying to grope her during the election campaign.
The incident happened when she was campaigning in the Jali Kothi area of the city – famous for sparking the 1857 Mutiny against British rule in India.
The huge crowd which had gathered to see the actress went out of control as she came to address them. In the chaotic situation, someone reportedly tried to grope the actress. Nagma turned around and slapped the youth.
Later, she said, “I did not slap anyone but yes, I did try to push them (crowd) away. No way, I could have allowed anyone to misbehave with me.’’
However, Nagma warned that she won’t come back if this kind of incident happens again.
The actress alleged that the administration didn’t provide her adequate security even as she tried to pacify the angry crowd. But efforts by her and other Congress leaders failed to pacify the crowd, forcing them to leave the area.
Demanding action against the SSP for lax security, Meerut District Congress acting president Manoj Tyagi said there should have been more security for Nagma as she is an actress. “We have met the DIG and the IG and demanded adequate security for the candidate.”
However, SSP Onkar Singh said the police had assigned one gunman for her security.
But since she is a film star, the SSP said, “We have also advised her that she needs to take extra precautions.’’
