A picture is worth a thousand words. And there are some pictures which will forever remain etched in the collective memory of mankind because of their sheer poignancy.
Here are the top five pictures from our recent history which became the haunting images of those tragedies:
1: Badly bruised, bloodied and dazed Indian air hostess Nidhi Chaphekar became the symbol of the terror attack on Brussels in March 2016.
2: Three-year-old Syrian boy Alan Kurdi who was drowned when his family tried to reach a Greek island from Turkey on Sept 2, 2015, triggering worldwode sympathy for the tragedy of Syrian regufees.
3: A unknown man falling after jumping out of the burning Trade Towers after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
4: A defiant Chinese who stood in the path of government tanks in Tiananmen Square in Beijing during pro-democracy protests in 1989.
5: The picture of 9-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phuc running naked to escape the South Vietnamese napalm attack on her village in North Vietnam on June 8, 1972, became the most haunting image of the Vietnam war. The badly burnt little girl had to tear off her clothes to run and save herself.
