HAMILTON (New Zealand): Three men accused of raping a Hamilton woman in the city two years ago have been found not guilty in the Hamilton High Court.
Harvinder Singh, 22, Kamaljeet Singh, 27, and Sumit Vermani, 26, all faced one charge of rape after an incident at a Lake Rd house overnight April 16 and 17, 2011.
However, in a dramatic twist the trio were immediately handcuffed by police after walking out of the dock and taken to Hamilton Central Police Station.
Vermani’s lawyer Mike Robb said at the instruction of the Immigration Department, the trio will now be deported back to India.
Amir Chand, who was last week acquitted, was also immediately deported back to India.
Due to being charged and the subsequent rape trial, none of the men had been able to apply for residency and the Department has chosen to send them home.
